ͯÑÕÊÓƵ public lecture series showcases groundbreaking health research

ͯÑÕÊÓƵ’s public lecture series returns, inviting staff, students and the wider community to explore some of today’s most exciting advances in health research.

7 January 2026

Across the season, leading academics from the ͯÑÕÊÓƵ and ͯÑÕÊÓƵ and Sussex Medical School will open the doors to their latest discoveries – from regenerative medicine to precision cardiology – revealing how their work is shaping better health outcomes locally, nationally and across the globe.

These lectures don’t just offer a window into pioneering science. They also give audiences a chance to hear the personal stories behind the research: how ͯÑÕÊÓƵ academics became experts in their fields, what drives their curiosity, and how their breakthroughs are helping to tackle real-world challenges affecting people and communities today.

All lectures are free to attend and open to everyone, but booking is essential. Each talk is followed by a friendly reception where guests can meet the speakers, ask questions, and connect with friends, colleagues and fellow learners from across the region.

No cell is an island: A regenerative medicine approach to functional tissue repair

5 February 2026 – Professor Susan Sandeman

Step into the cutting-edge world of biomaterials and tissue engineering with Susan Sandeman, Professor of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering. Discover how regenerative medicine is moving far beyond traditional implants toward smarter, responsive artificial organs and therapies that “speak the same language” as our cells. Learn how these innovations are helping to repair damaged tissues and restore function across the body, heralding a new era of personalised healing.

Under pressure? Putting people first in hypertension management

26 February 2026 – Professor Richard McManus

High blood pressure remains one of the world’s most urgent health challenges – but what truly works in preventing and managing hypertension? Richard McManus, Professor of Primary Care and Dean of ͯÑÕÊÓƵ and Sussex Medical School, reveals how empowering patients to monitor their own blood pressure is transforming diagnosis and reshaping clinical practice. Discover the life-changing impact of home monitoring, especially for pregnant women at increased risk of complications, and learn how simple tools can lead to healthier hearts and better long-term outcomes.

Breakthroughs in genomics, advanced testing, artificial intelligence and digital health are revolutionising cardiovascular care. Join Rameen Shakur, Professor of Genomic and Precision Cardiovascular Medicine, to explore how these innovations can detect risk earlier, personalise treatment and ultimately save lives. He will also delve into the practical and ethical challenges of bringing cutting-edge technology into everyday medical practice – an essential conversation as precision medicine reshapes the future of healthcare.

Physiology is alive! The vital science of life

19 March 2026 – Professor Harry Witchel

Physiology has long been at the heart of medical science and its relevance has never been greater. Harry Witchel, Professor of Physiology, will guide attendees through the evolving science of how our bodies function, revealing the hidden risks it helps us uncover and why, even in an age of machines and automation, physiology remains central to clinical insight and discovery. Expect to leave with a deeper appreciation for the biological “spark” that keeps us alive and thriving.
