Our foundation courses are integrated with an honours degree, enabling you to spend a year developing the knowledge and skills needed before you start your degree with us. They are a great opportunity if you do not have the required A-levels or equivalent qualification, are changing career or returning to study.

As well as gaining academic knowledge of the principles of business and law, you’ll explore the fundamentals of numeracy and data handling, life skills, citizenship and how to prepare yourself for studying your honours degree at 童颜视频.

Course content

What is an integrated foundation year? 

A degree with an integrated foundation year is designed for students who do not have the entry requirements needed to start a degree with us. This could be because you don’t have the grades or subjects that we need, you are changing career or returning to study. Upon successful completion of the foundation year, you can progress to one of our BSc(Hons) courses, depending on which foundation year pathway you choose.

This means that your course will take four years instead of three (or five with a placement year). Our foundation year is a great introduction to your chosen subject area and is an opportunity to develop valuable study and self-management skills, communication, teamwork and problem-solving techniques which help build your confidence and prepare you for the rest of your course.

At the School of Business and Law we offer three integrated foundation year courses. If you successfully pass the foundation year, you can progress directly onto your choice of degree from those listed without having to reapply through UCAS. UK students will also be able to apply for student funding for their whole course – foundation year plus either a three-year degree or a four-year degree with placement year.

Foundation year syllabus

You will complete four modules in the foundation year. These will allow you to explore contemporary debates in business and law, and develop a strong understanding of the core principles of both. You’ll develop the transferable skills that are essential for study at degree level, explore the relationship between theory and practice and look at how this relates to debates and issues in business.

Learning will be through a mixture of lectures, small group teaching in workshops and seminars, private study and course work. You’ll be supported throughout by your personal tutor.

Modules

  • Applied Numeracy and Data Handling Skills

    This module will help you to make practical decisions in the business world and come up with solutions to business problems. You’ll work on your core arithmetic, algebra, statistics, mathematical modelling and probability skills, building your capability to reason with numbers and other mathematical concepts.

  • Introduction to Wellbeing and Study Success

    This module introduces you to study skills and concepts of wellbeing. Using what you learnt in the Applied Numeracy and Data Handling Skills module, you’ll take part in a practical group project on the broad theme of wellbeing and personal/academic development.

  • Academic Knowledge for Law and Business

    This module equips prospective law and business students with the foundation skills for academic study. You'll be introduced to the core principles of law and business and have opportunities to apply theoretical concepts in practice. You'll also explore the meaning and application of legal and business terminology, academic writing and research skills that are essential to your academic development.

  • Developing Practical Professional Knowledge

    You'll develop law, business, accounting, finance or economics knowledge through by working on an individual project themed around responsible enterprise. You'll develop confidence in your ability to use the study skills you have learned during your foundation year, and reflect on the experience and on how it has contributed to your preparation for degree studies.

Dr Md Rifad Chowdhury

Dr Md Rifad Chowdhury is a lecturer in human resource management and course leader for the integrated foundation year, overseeing three pathways: Accounting, Finance and Economics; Business Management; and Law. He holds a PhD from the 童颜视频, an International Business Management MSc from Northumbria University, and a Human Resource Management BSc from Anglia Ruskin University.

Md Rifad’s teaching expertise spans leadership and people management, talent and performance management, reflective practice, professional development and cross-cultural aspects of work and organisations. His research focuses on employee motivation, workplace wellbeing, leadership and cross-cultural management, with particular interest in public sector contexts in the UK and Bangladesh.

He is a Fellow of Advance HE (FHEA) and is committed to inclusive, compassionate and research-informed teaching that empowers students to link theory with professional practice and develop as ethical, globally minded professionals.

You will also have access to our Careers Connect portal where you can book careers appointments and events, look for part and full-time jobs and find placements/ internships.

Fees and costs

Course fees

UK (full-time) foundation year 5,760 GBP

International (full-time) 18,108 GBP

The £5,760 fee applies to the integrated foundation year only. For UK students the fee for each year of the rest of the course will be the undergraduate honours degree regulated fee, currently £9,535.

Students applying for this course will be eligible to apply for student funding for their whole course – foundation year plus either a three-year degree, or a four-year degree with placement year.

 

The course fees shown here are what you will pay for the first year of your course if you start in the academic year 2026–27 and you are studying full-time (fee amount is subject to parliamentary approval). You pay fees in each year of your course. The fees you pay may increase each year.

Regulated fees

Fees for UK students on undergraduate and some postgraduate courses are set by the UK government. These are known as regulated fees. From academic year 2026–27, regulated fees will increase annually in line with forecast inflation.

Student Finance England loans for tuition fees and maintenance will also rise in line with inflation.

If you are studying part-time your fee will usually be calculated based on the number of modules that you take.

Unregulated fees

Course fees for international students taking undergraduate courses and for most postgraduate courses are not regulated by the UK government. Unregulated fees may increase each year by up to 5% or the forecast Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation (whichever is higher).

You may have to pay additional costs during your studies. The cost of optional activities is not included in your tuition fee and you will need to meet this cost in addition to your fees

  • Students who choose to take an optional placement will have travel and living expenses. The cost of this depends on where and how long your placement is.
  • Textbooks are available from the university library (many as e-books) but you may wish to budget up to £200 to buy your own copies.
  • For some courses, field trips are an optional activity, but we do encourage students to  participate as they contribute to the overall experience of studying the degree. The cost for field trips is not included in the tuition fee and must be paid for by students. However, please be assured we do try to keep field trip costs to a minimum. If you would struggle to meet this cost, there is a hardship fund that you may be able to access.

Two miles north of 童颜视频 seafront, Moulsecoomb is our largest campus and student village. Moulsecoomb has been transformed by a recent development of our estate. On campus you’ll find the Students’ Union events venue, and sports and fitness facilities, alongside the library and student centre.

Over 900 students live here in our Moulsecoomb Place halls and the new Mithras halls – Brunswick, Goldstone, Hanover, Preston and Regency.

Moulsecoomb has easy access to buses and trains so you can access all the exciting things happening in our home city.

  • Varley Park is a popular, dedicated halls site, offering a mix of rooms and bathroom options at different prices. It is around two miles from Moulsecoomb campus and four miles from the city centre, and is easy to get to by bus.
